My Nonresolution Resolution

For thirty-five years, I have never broken my New Year’s resolution: not to make any resolutions.

But this year is different. I must have a resolution.

Here it is: we must not allow Donald Trump, the Republican Party, or the incoming Congress to change or violate any part of our Declaration of Independence or Constitution.

They have all said that they plan to bring forward Project 2025, a 1,000-page detailed plan for changing our democracy into a pseudo-Christian theocracy. Trump has already named nine of the authors of this project to key staff positions.

The insurrection on January 6, 2021, masterminded by Trump and his fellow traitors (some of whom are in prison), showed how fragile both these documents are. Had these insurrectionists killed House Leader Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Pence as promised, imprisoned Congress members who opposed the takeover, and commanded Proud Boys and Oath Keepers to use force, Trump could have successfully carried out a coup.

It is no secret that Trump has no regard for our Constitution and has promised to continue to violate it.

With that in mind, how does a ninety-three-year-old man, without an army, billions of dollars, or a large group of constitutional attorneys, carry out his resolution?

First, I will take on the mantle of “orenda,” a concept derived from the Iroquois nation that brings like-minded people together to creatively change what is happening. (See blog post “Orenda,” posted on November 22, 2024, for more on this concept.)

For example, today, I received a communication from Trump’s niece, Dr. Mary Trump, who is adamantly opposed to her sick uncle. I joined her group and sent money.

A couple of other such groups also contacted me today. I did the same. I am ready to support them financially, write emails, vote for their like-minded projects, and demonstrate publicly.

Second, I am adamant about preserving the separation of church and state as described in the Constitution. I have no interest in a theocracy or any religion having a major impact on our country. We must remain a secular nation where all its citizens can practice their religious beliefs or not.

For example, I have supported Americans United for the Separation of Church and State for years. It is a relatively small group but highly effective in its mission and is part of my orenda.

Americans United isn’t the only organization whose mission is to protect the separation of church and state and our Constitution. With the implementation of Project 2025, this and similar organizations must hire more staff and constitutional lawyers to stop the traitorous takeover.

There are many more organizations out there whose objective is to protect our Constitution. I must support them also.

I intend to show up at every local demonstration to oppose any group whose agenda is to undermine liberty and justice for all. There seem to be a lot of groups and churches out there whose purpose is to destroy and deny equal rights to all kinds of minorities. They need to be taken down legally.

This resolution will demand hard work, discipline, and cooperation. I hope many of my readers will also feel the power of orenda and take action.

PeaceLoveJoyHopeKindness, and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

P.S. People often ask me provocative questions about current events, both religious and secular. I have found that some of these questions are being asked universally. I’ll be periodically alternating regular articles with one of those questions and my answer. I invite you to send me your question to bilaulenbach@yahoo.com.

  1. Thank you Bil for your tireless support of our fragile constitution. You are so impressive! Even in California we cannot stop pushing back against Trump and his followers.

  2. I agree with your resolve and have contributed to organizations that are dedicated to oppose the Trump presidency. My hope is that opposition will at least slow down his efforts while launching a recovery of human decency.
